This is a popular subject among singers. To be able to have the flexibility to sing any range is a goal for a lot of singers. Ahh, to have versatility with the voice, such a beautiful thing!
So, how do you expand your range you ask? Simple. First, you must find your range. If you know how to find middle “C” on the piano, keeping your head straight, play that note and sing it for 8 counts on the syllable “Ah”. Do the same for the next note up (C#), and match the pitch with your voice. Continue this process until you can’t sing the notes comfortably anymore. Try not to force the notes out, the higher you get. This marks the limit of your higher range.
Now try doing the same process starting on middle “C” again, but playing the next note down (B), and singing that note for 8 counts. Also, make sure your head is straight. Keep going down on the piano until you’re unable to sing a note comfortably. This is the depth of your lower range. This exercise is called LONG TONES. Now you know the limits of your higher and lower range. Wonderful!
Let’s look at increasing and expanding your range. There are several vocal exercises that encourage you to “touch” the notes at the top and bottom of your range. One of the main ones I like is the MAJOR SCALE. Singing the major scale can quickly improve and stretch your voice. Before you know it, you’re hitting pitches that are higher and deeper than you ever thought you could hit!
ARPEGGIOS are another great way of expanding your range. Singing arpeggios can stretch out your voice, especially when adding a”distracting movement” to the highest note. A simple wave of the hand on the highest note will help you to open up and sing the higher notes without closing, which is something singers tend to do when “over thinking” the high notes. Try these exercises to immediately increase your range!
