Singing With Cherita

How Do I Take Care of my Voice?

Vocal health is very important, especially for those that sing on a regular basis. We don’t realize just how much we use our voices daily. I mean, there’s talking on the phone, conducting meetings, getting kids ready in the morning, teaching, singing, etc. That’s a lot of wear and tear on the vocal cords, so it’s important to treat your vocal cords like an infant, with care.

Your vocal cords are paper-like thin, and vibrate very fast when singing high, and slow when singing low. Each time they vibrate, they touch when closing. If your vocal cords are dry when they touch, over time, there will be friction. If the singer continues to sing without proper hydration, after while, the singer will experience hoarseness. Eventually after creating bad habits of taking care of the cords, the singer will develop lymph nodules, known as lymph nodes. If the singer then decides to get the nodes removed, it can leave scarred tissue, also causing the singer to lose their singing AND speaking voice.

So, with that being said..

There are a number of things that help keep your voice in top notch shape. First, get plenty of sleep, drink lots of water, exercise, moisturize your voice, steam voice either in shower (inhale steam), wrap your neck with a scarf with changing weather conditions, stay away from smokers and smoking, alcohol, talking while smoking, and caffeinated drinks.

When flying, try to limit your talking/singing to avoid vocal fatigue. Ask for a vaporizer in your hotel room, if staying in one. You can use a vaporizer everyday, especially if your always in dry climates, and drinking plain water all day, even sipping on water throughout the day helps.

When in conversation, avoid yelling and screaming, especially in dry climates, or around smoke. These are all drying and damaging to your vocal cords.

Here’s a list of a few things you can do to keep your voice in top notch condition:
